Breathing in Confinement – The death sentence of political prisoner Reza Abdali, held in Ahvaz Prison, has been upheld by the Supreme Court.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, on Thursday, 6 November 2025, the death sentence of Reza Abdali—previously issued by Branch 1 of the Ahvaz Revolutionary Court on the charge of “membership in the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organisation of Iran”—was confirmed by the Supreme Court and formally communicated to him.

Reza Abdali, 35, from Ahvaz, was arrested by security forces in February 2025 and, after several months of interrogation, was tried in July 2025 in the Ahvaz Revolutionary Court presided over by Judge Ehsan Adibimehr. Based on the issued verdict, he was sentenced to death and 15 years’ imprisonment. This ruling has now become final after confirmation by the Supreme Court.

Informed sources report that proceedings in Mr Abdali’s case were accompanied by violations of fair trial standards. He was denied access to an independent lawyer, and his family and relatives have reported security pressure and threats aimed at preventing them from publicising the case.

Mr Abdali is currently held in Ward 8 of Sheiban Prison in Ahvaz, in poor conditions and under severe communication restrictions.

The issuance and implementation of death sentences in cases involving political charges—especially when the proceedings involve violations of the defendant’s rights—constitutes a clear breach of international human rights obligations, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
