Breathing in Confinement – A prisoner in Babol Prison has died by suicide due to severe pressure and lack of necessary care.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, on Saturday, 29 November 2025, a prisoner in Babol Prison died following a suicide attempt. The identity of the prisoner, Omid Jahani, has been confirmed by Breathing in Confinement.
Omid Jahani, from Behnemir in Babolsar County, was an ordinary (non-political) prisoner who had been under psychological pressure and held in poor prison conditions. Due to the absence of supportive services, psychological care, and essential medical attention, he was not provided timely treatment after his suicide attempt and consequently died.
The lack of psychological-support mechanisms, inadequate healthcare services, and harsh, inhumane prison conditions are major factors contributing to the high risk of suicide among prisoners. Under international human-rights standards — including the Nelson Mandela Rules (UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners) — the full responsibility for protecting the life, physical health, and mental wellbeing of prisoners lies with prison authorities and relevant state institutions.
Any negligence, inaction, or failure to take timely preventive measures constitutes a serious violation of human rights and a breach of the legal and ethical obligations of prison officials.
