Breathing in Confinement: Ebrahim Dowlatabadi, one of those arrested during the January 2026 protests, has reportedly been sentenced to death on charges of moharebeh (“enmity against God”) by the Revolutionary Court of Mashhad.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Ebrahim Dowlatabadi, a political prisoner held in Mashhad Prison, was tried on Monday, 27 April 2026, in Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of Mashhad, presided over by Judge Gholamreza Akbari-Moghaddam. He was sentenced to death on charges of moharebeh and “playing a role in directing the January protests.” It is reported that the verdict has been formally communicated to him.
According to the report, Ebrahim Dowlatabadi, the father of two children aged 9 and 14, was arrested during the January 2026 public protests in Tabarsi Square, Mashhad. At the time of his arrest, his two brothers, Vahid and Esmaeil, as well as his teenage child, were also detained by security forces.
According to informed sources, following the issuance of the sentence, he was transferred to Ward 6-1 of Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad. Some sources have stated that this transfer has heightened concerns regarding the status of his case and the potential for the sentence to be carried out in the near future, although no official statement has been issued.
Amid rising regional tensions and following recent statements by the Head of the Judiciary regarding a “wartime posture” and the need to accelerate judicial proceedings and enforcement of sentences, reports indicate an intensification of the security atmosphere, including increased arrests and a rise in the issuance and implementation of death sentences.
