Breathing in Confinement – A death sentence has been issued for Ehsan Faridi, a 22-year-old student and political prisoner currently held in Tabriz Prison, by Branch 3 of the Revolutionary Court of Tabriz.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Ehsan Faridi has been sentenced to death by Branch 3 of the Revolutionary Court, with counsel from Branch 1 of the same court, presided over by Judge Fathinejad. He was convicted on the charge of “corruption on earth” (efsad fel-arz).

A source familiar with the case told Breathing in Confinement: “After ten months of uncertainty in Tabriz Prison, Ehsan Faridi is now facing a death sentence.”

According to reports, this ruling was issued with input from Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court presided over by Judge Fathinejad. The charge of “waging war against the state” (moharebeh) was dismissed during the trial. The verdict has been appealed and the case is now under review by the Supreme Court.

Ehsan Faridi, an engineering student specializing in manufacturing and production at the Tabriz Technical College, has previously faced separate prison sentences. In March 2024, he was sentenced to six months in prison on the charge of “propaganda against the regime.” In September 2024, Criminal Court Branch 2 in Tabriz sentenced him to 18 months’ imprisonment on another part of the same case.

Three court hearings related to the charges of moharebeh and efsad fel-arz were held via video conference at the Revolutionary Court in Tabriz on August 3, December 11, 2024, and early February 2025.

Ehsan Faridi was first arrested on March 8, 2024, and transferred to Tabriz Prison. He was released on bail on March 18, but was re-arrested on June 18, 2024, after being summoned to the Tabriz Prosecutor’s Office. He was then transferred to the Intelligence Office. According to informed sources, he was subjected to psychological and physical torture during his detention. He was later transferred to Tabriz Prison, where he is currently being held.
