Breathing in Confinement – A prisoner previously sentenced to death on charges of “espionage for Israel” and “blasphemy” has been transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for the execution of his sentence. His identity has been confirmed as Mohammad Amin Mahdavi Shayesteh.

Mahdavi Shayesteh, aged 21, was arrested in autumn 2023 and sentenced to death by Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Salavati, on charges of “espionage for Israel” and “insulting sacred values.”

This transfer comes despite his request for a retrial having been accepted, according to his lawyer. Nevertheless, he was moved to solitary confinement today—an action that typically precedes the implementation of the death sentence.

Breathing in Confinement had previously warned of a rise in executions and an intensification of repression, particularly following the recent escalation in tensions between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Israel.
