Breathing in Confinement: On Tuesday, October 29, 2024, in a brutal and inhumane act, the amputation sentence for two brothers was carried out in Urmia Prison. Both defendants were under 18 years old at the time of their arrest.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news agency of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, on Tuesday, October 29, the inhumane sentence of amputating four fingers from the right hands of Shahab and Mehrdad Teimouri was carried out in Urmia Prison.

According to a report from Breathing in Confinement, Shahab and Mehrdad Teimouri were sentenced six years ago, in December 2018, by Branch 1 of the Juvenile Criminal Court in Urmia, on charges of theft in Malard, Karaj. They were both sentenced to the amputation of four fingers on their right hands while under the age of 18. The sentence was upheld in April 2020 by Branch 24 of the Supreme Court and was carried out on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, in Urmia Prison. The two brothers were arrested along with another defendant, named Khatibi, whose sentence was overturned by the Supreme Court, and his case was referred to a parallel court, resulting in a sentence of 20 years in prison.

Shahab Teimouri, born on June 9, 1985, and Mehrdad Teimouri, born on September 21, 1990, were originally from Sarpol-e Zahab and residing in Karaj. In his court defense, Mehrdad Teimouri stated: “I admit to the theft. I am a thief, but not in the way the police report claims. In 2015, they forced me to admit 11 thefts … I had debts to three victims from other thefts, so I was compelled to steal to pay them back.”

The brutal act of amputating fingers is an inhumane punishment and a clear example of torture. The Iranian authorities are the only government to carry out punishments like amputation and flogging on defendants.

The Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran calls on international human rights organizations to take urgent action to stop such inhumane sentences and government-organized atrocities in Iran.
