Breathing in ConfinementDr Fariba Hosseini, a dentist and former political prisoner, has been arrested on the charge of “propaganda against the regime.”

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Dr Fariba Hosseini, a 36-year-old dentist and child clinical psychologist, was arrested on 31 December 2025 following a raid by security agents on her private residence and was transferred to Adel-Abad Prison in Shiraz.

Based on received information, the charge brought against her is “propaganda against the regime.” Informed sources have stated that her arrest followed her critical remarks on social media, particularly on the X platform. In the early days of the nationwide protests, Ms Hosseini had spoken out against the suppression of protesters and the use by security forces of instruments such as batons, paintball guns, and pepper spray.

Following her arrest, the judicial authority issued a bail order for her temporary release in the amount of 400 million tomans. However, despite the bail being secured by her family, the security authority prevented her release and increased the bail amount to two billion tomans. This measure, taken without providing justified reasons or documented legal grounds, is in clear contradiction with the principles of criminal procedure, including the principle of proportionality between the bail amount, the nature of the charge, and the circumstances of the accused.

Due to the family’s inability to secure the increased amount, Ms Hosseini has not yet been released. In response to this decision, she has been on a hunger strike since Tuesday, 10 February, in protest against her continued detention and the disproportionate increase in bail.

Reports also indicate that prison authorities have restricted her right to access and freely communicate with her defence lawyer, Ms Ansari. This action may constitute an explicit violation of the right to access legal counsel and the right to a fair trial, as enshrined in the Constitution and international human rights instruments, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

The detention of individuals for the peaceful expression of their views and supportive activities, as well as the alteration and escalation of bail after it has been secured, raises serious concerns regarding respect for legal principles, judicial transparency, and the fundamental rights of defendants.
