According to “Breathing in Confinement”, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Mohammad Khani, a researcher, translator and PhD student at Allameh University, is being held in Evin Prison without medical care despite having been shot in the back. The condition of this imprisoned student is described as critical.
“Mohammad Khani suffers from a lung disease. On the day of the attack when security agents fired tear gases into Ward 8, Mohammad developed breathing difficulty and went to the ward yard to use fresh air where he was shot by birdshot pellets as well as a bullet at the back near the spinal cord”, said an informed source to the reporter of the “Breathing in Confinement.
The source added: “Despite the serious condition of this imprisoned student, the prison authorities did nothing to treat him but to cover his wound by a sterile gauze.”
Three days later, following the protest of other political prisoners and his family, Mohammad Khani was sent to Taleghani Hospital on Monday, October 17. However, he was returned to the prison without completing his treatment.
The informed source told the reporter of the “Breathing in Confinement”: “Because of having been shot in the back, Mohammed Khani needed an urgent surgery. But after 3 days, when he was transferred to Taleghani Hospital, a doctor named Movahedi just took the bullet out without anaesthesia, and then Mr. Khani was returned to Evin prison without taking any measures to prevent infection.”
According to Mustafa Nili, Mr. Khani’s lawyer: “After being sent to the hospital, Mr. Khani was returned to the prison without a complete treatment, while considering his injuries, he needs to undergo an urgent treatment in a hospital as soon as possible.”
