Breathing in Confinement: Mehrab Abdollahzadeh, a political prisoner held in Urmia Prison, has been sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court of Urmia.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Mehrab Abdollahzadeh was sentenced to death by the First Branch of the Revolutionary Court in Urmia, presided over by Judge Najafzadeh. He was charged with “armed rebellion (Baghi) and participating in the killing of a Basij member.”
Mehrab Abdollahzadeh, 26, a hairdresser from the village of Khoshalan in the Somay-e Bradost district, was arrested during nationwide protests in October 2022 in the Vali Asr neighborhood of Urmia. Following his arrest, he was tortured and interrogated before being transferred to the city’s prison. In mid-September 2024, he was sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court. While the verdict had already been communicated to him, his family refrained from disclosing it due to threats from security agencies.
In recent days, death sentences have been issued for at least 20 political prisoners.
Following the start of the presidency of Pezeshkian, the number of executions, including those involving political prisoners, has risen, breaking records of recent years.
