Breathing in Confinement – On Tuesday, 14 May 2025, Miryousef Younesi, a political prisoner held in Evin Prison, began a hunger strike in protest against his forced transfer to Ward 7 and the poor conditions there.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, 70-year-old political prisoner Miryousef Younesi has gone on hunger strike in Ward 7 of Evin Prison.
Aida Younesi, the daughter of the political prisoner, announced on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter):
“My father, Miryousef Younesi, has started a hunger strike today in protest against the new pressures, his unlawful transfer to Ward 7, and the inhumane conditions in that ward.”
She further wrote that Evin Prison officers violently transferred her father to Ward 7 during a cabin visit with his family. According to her, during the visit, the officers separated the family members and transferred Mr Younesi to the new ward without allowing him to collect his personal belongings or essential medication.
She added, “My father said during a phone call that he is being held in catastrophic conditions; he has no access to his medication, clothes, or other essential items.”
Miryousef Younesi, a 70-year-old political prisoner and the father of imprisoned student Ali Younesi, was arrested in Shahroud on 28 December 2022. After spending 107 days in solitary confinement in Wards 240 and 209, and then in small closed group cells in Ward 209, he was transferred to the general ward of Evin Prison.
On 31 December 2023, he was sentenced to five years of imprisonment by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court. According to his family, Mr Younesi was not taken to court because he refused to wear prison clothes, and the judge denied his lawyers the right to defend him.
During his detention, Mr Younesi has completely lost hearing in one ear, and the other ear is severely damaged. However, he has been denied access to adequate medical care throughout this period.
