Motahareh Gonaei Sentenced to 21 Months in Prison

Breathing in Confinement – Student activist Motahareh Gonaei has been sentenced to 21 months of imprisonment.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Motahareh Gonaei announced in a note: “The Revolutionary Court sentenced me to 15 months in prison on the charge of ‘propaganda against the Islamic Republic’ and 6 months in prison on the charge of ‘insulting Khamenei’. My mobile phone was also confiscated for allegedly containing incriminating material. This verdict was issued by Branch 29 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court in less than a week.”

Born in 1996, Gonaei is a dentistry student. She had previously been arrested for political activities and was released in March this year after completing a prison sentence.

Motahareh Gonaei was arrested again on Saturday, 14 June 2025, in Tehran and released a month later on bail. In 2023, she had also been punished by the disciplinary committee of Tehran University of Medical Sciences with a 24-month suspension from studies and forced transfer to Ardabil University of Medical Sciences.
