Breathing in Confinement: Varisheh Moradi, a political prisoner currently held in Evin Prison, has been sentenced to an additional six months’ imprisonment in a new case by Branch 2 of the Tehran Criminal Court.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Ms Moradi was convicted on charges of “propaganda against the regime” by the relevant branch of the Qods Judicial Complex in Tehran, presided over by Judge Abolfazl Ameri Shahrabi, and sentenced to six months of discretionary imprisonment.

The report states that the sentence was issued in connection with a letter written on the anniversary of the 2022 nationwide uprising. In this case, Ms Moradi was prosecuted and convicted alongside four other female political prisoners.

It is noteworthy that Varisheh Moradi had previously been sentenced to death in another case on charges of baghi (“armed rebellion”) through alleged membership in the Kurdistan Free Life Party. Following an appeal, the death sentence was overturned by the Supreme Court due to deficiencies in the investigation and was referred back to Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court for retrial.
