Breathing in Confinement: Political prisoner Alireza Beiranvand, who had been arrested in Tehran, has died in prison.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Alireza Beiranvand, a political prisoner, poet, and environmental activist from Izeh, who had previously been arrested in Tehran and was being held in prison, died while in custody.

According to the report, security authorities have stated that the cause of death was “poisoning.” However, no precise details, independent medical documentation, or impartial official report regarding the cause and circumstances of his death have so far been published.

Reports indicate that Alireza Beiranvand had previously been arrested in connection with the protests of 2017 and 2022.

His wife wrote in a message on social media:

“My dear, brave, and patriotic husband… How could you leave and not witness the dawn of the homeland’s freedom? My whole being is filled with the pain of losing you. May your soul rest in peace, and may your memory live on forever.”

This incident is being reported amid ongoing concerns raised in recent years by human rights organisations regarding the health conditions, physical safety, and detention conditions of political prisoners in Iran. Under international human rights standards, any death occurring in detention facilities or prisons requires an immediate, independent, transparent investigation accessible to both the public and the deceased’s family.

At the time of publication of this report, no additional information or results from independent investigations regarding this case had become available.
