Qezel Hesar Prison: Transfer of 11 Death Row Inmates to Solitary Confinement for Execution

“Breathing in Confinement”: On Monday, 9 December 2024, 11 prisoners convicted of “murder” and drug-related crimes were transferred to solitary confinement in Qezel Hesar Prison in Karaj to await execution.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, these 11 inmates were moved to solitary confinement in preparation for their execution.
Six of these prisoners had been sentenced to death for drug-related offenses. The identity of one inmate, Hasan Ali Yousefi, has been confirmed by Breathing in Confinement. The remaining individuals include two Baloch citizens, one Turk, one Lur citizen, and one Afghan national, whose identities are still under investigation.
The identities of five other prisoners sentenced to death for “murder” have not yet been confirmed.
Annual Report on Executions in Iran
According to the annual report of the Statistics Center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 848 citizens were executed in 2023. Of these, 7 were executed in public. 57 percent of the executions were for drug related charges.
