Breathing in Confinement: Widespread violations of human rights with massive arrests and violent treatment of protesting citizens continued in the past month. In particular a significant intensification of repressive acts of the so called “Gasht Ershad” (police agents who arrest people on the streets specially women for not complying with compulsory hijab), was among the examples of suppressive measures in the past month. .

According to the Statistics Center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 49 prisoners were executed last month, one whom a woman named Robab Danaei who was executed on charge of “murder” in Yazd prison.

Among those executed, 10 prisoners were executed for drug-related crimes, 29 on charges of murder, and 10 on other charges such as armed robbery or rape.

Since March 20, 2022, at least 190 prisoners have been hanged in Iran.

The executions in the past month were carried out in the prisons of Birjand, Yazd, Tehran, Qom, Karaj, Isfahan, Tabriz, Ilam, Borujerd, Sari, Mashhad, Jolfa, Shiraz, Zabul, and Zahedan.

Of 49 executions, only 5 were announced by the state media.

Furthermore, at least 17 death sentences were issued last month, with 2 of them have already been upheld by the Supreme Court.

The inhuman sentence of whipping
Last month, in addition to the death sentences, the judicial authorities of the Islamic Republic issued inhuman flogging sentences for 5 activists. One of these convicts who received a sentence of 100 lashes was Mahbubeh Ramezani, the mother of Pejman Ghalipour, one of the victims of the November 2019 protests .

Detentions
At least 220 citizens were arrested in the past month.

Last month, many activists were arrested in various cities. Eleven of the Justice Seeking Mothers (mothers whose children were killed in the November 2019 uprisings), some citizens who protested the mandatory hijab, 7 citizens accused of posting live programs on Instagram, some Baha’i youth in Shiraz and other cities, and 11  Sukhtbars (fuel carriers) in Saravan were among those arrested during the last month.

Prison sentences
In the past month, 11 civil and political activists received at least 43 years and 3 days of prison sentences. They were as well banned from activities on social media or of their other social rights.

Workers’ protests and their dismissal
Dismissal of workers protesting their living conditions was another example of violations of human rights committed by the authorities of the Islamic Republic in the last one month.

Over the past month, 30 workers of copper mine in Sungon with between 15-20 years of experience were fired.

According to the reports, last week a nurse in Mashhad was fired after protesting her poor living conditions and not receiving her salary.

People under the most severe repressions and deprivations, under the economic pressure caused by the government’s predatory policies, are protesting widely. However, instead of responding to their demands, the government treats them with violence and arrests and beatings.
In the past month, at least 233 protest gatherings were held by various groups of people. Only pensioners staged 119 protest rallies in various cities. Fourteen protest movements also were held by medical staff and nurses.
