Breathing in Confinement: On Tuesday, December 3, a detainee accused of drug-related offenses died under torture at Faridan Police Station.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news organ of the Human Rights League of Iranian Prisoners, Ali-Asghar Beheshti, who had been arrested on charges of drug-related crimes, lost his life following severe beatings and torture at the police station in Faridan, located in western Isfahan province.

Breathing in Confinement citing a reliable source reported, Ali-Asghar Beheshti was subjected to brutal beatings and torture after his arrest on suspicion of drug-related offenses. He fainted due to the severity of the torture and, upon regaining consciousness, was in a dire physical state. Beheshti pleaded for medical assistance, but his requests were ignored by the officers and authorities at the station, who took no steps to address his condition.

He was left unattended and soon succumbed to his injuries from the torture.

On Wednesday, December 4, 2024, Beheshti’s body was buried under the supervision of officers, without any medical examiner’s authorization. Authorities threatened and intimidated his family, warning them against publicizing the incident.

Since the beginning of President Pezeshkian’s administration (July 22, 2024), this marks the eighth reported case of death under torture in Iran’s detention centers and prisons, as revealed by human rights activists.

The names of the seven other victims who have died under torture during this period are as follows:

  1. Seyed Mohammad Mousavi – Lahijan Police Station
  2. Masoumeh Hoveizat – Sepidar Prison, Ahvaz
  3. Komeil Abolhasani – Tonekabon Detention Center
  4. An Unnamed Prisoner – Gilan Gharb Criminal Investigation Department
  5. Amirreza Hamedi Osmanvandani – Ahmad Sar Gooran Police Station
  6. Maziar Moadab – Rasht Detention Center
  7. Akbar Ghaffari – Malekan Criminal Investigation Department

The regime’s inaction regarding deaths under torture in detention centers highlights the systematic nature of these violent practices. These incidents underscore the judiciary’s support for officers who, without fear of repercussions, commit such crimes. This constitutes a blatant violation of human rights and poses a severe threat to detainees’ lives in Iran.

The Human Rights League of Iranian Prisoners condemns these unlawful actions and calls for urgent international intervention to put an end to the systematic violence in Iran.
