Breathing in Confinement – In continuation of the protests against the extensive wave of executions in Ghezel Hessar Prison, a group of prisoners in Ward 2 of the facility have launched a hunger strike and sit-in.
This protest began after at least 19 prisoners were transferred to solitary confinement—an act which, according to informed sources, is a prelude to their imminent executions.
According to reports received by Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, the protesting inmates aim through this action to make their voices heard against the endless cycle of executions and the harsh, inhuman conditions inside the prison.
Families of the prisoners and human-rights activists have expressed deep concern for the health and lives of the striking inmates, calling for the immediate halt of execution orders, an end to inhumane treatment, and responsible attention to the prisoners’ demands.
The Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran this morning urged the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran and all international human-rights organisations to take urgent action to save the lives of these prisoners.
If the hunger strike continues and inmates convicted of ordinary offences join the protest, the “Tuesdays Against Executions” campaign is expected to gain a new wave of support and solidarity both inside and outside prisons—a cry for life, justice, and an end to the death penalty.
