Breathing in Confinement – The 79th week of the “Tuesdays Against Executions” campaign by political prisoners: Continued resistance amidst repression.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, the “Tuesdays Against Executions” campaign continues to stand firm and unwavering in the face of brutal crackdowns. While the regime seeks to silence voices for justice through executions, exile, and violent suppression, the campaign presses on with its clear message: “No to executions” and “Yes to resistance until freedom.”

In a statement, the political prisoners wrote:

The 79th Week of the “Tuesdays Against Executions” Campaign in 48 Prisons Across the Country

Execution of Two Political Prisoners – Mehdi Hassani and Behrouz Ehsani Eslamloo, Members of the Campaign

Despite a brutal attack targeting the heart of the “Tuesdays Against Executions” campaign at Ghezel Hesar Prison, the movement continues with resilience and unity.

Faced with its inability to resolve internal and external crises, the regime has sharpened its repression against the people. On the morning of Sunday, 27 July, the regime executed two members of this campaign — political prisoners Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani — at Ghezel Hesar Prison. The executions were carried out unjustly, without prior notice, and without allowing final visits with their families.

The day before, on Saturday, 26 July, following orders from the head of Ghezel Hesar Prison, Allah-Karam Azizi, and his deputies, Hassan Ghabadi and Esmail Farajnejad, over 100 armed prison guards and intelligence agents stormed the political prisoners’ ward (Unit 4). All political prisoners were transferred to solitary confinement, handcuffed, shackled, with a bag pulled over their heads. Following this attack, Saeed Masouri, one of the original signatories of the “Tuesdays Against Executions” call, was exiled to Zahedan Prison.

In response to this criminal act, resilient prisoners in Qarchak and Greater Tehran Prisons raised slogans and held ceremonies to reaffirm their commitment to stopping executions.

Also last week, political prisoner Yaghoob Derakhshan, previously arrested for “propaganda against the regime,” was sentenced to death in Lakan Prison in Rasht.

At least 20 people were executed in various prisons across the country in the past week. During the one-year presidency of Masoud Pezeshkian, the number of executions reached at least 1,477 – higher than in previous years and especially more than during Ebrahim Raisi’s presidency.

Gholamhossein Mohseni Eje’i, head of the judiciary, publicly declared an escalation in repression during his press conference last week, stating that over 2,000 people had been arrested during the “12-Day War.”

We, the members of the campaign, believe that the regime’s unrelenting violence aims to instil fear and silence a society that, despite all pressures, continues to insist on its rightful demands for justice, freedom, human dignity, and the right to self-determination.

We, the members of the “Tuesdays Against Executions” campaign in 48 prisons across the country, condemn the inhumane and unjust executions and repression of prisoners. We call on all people of conscience and defenders of freedom, both within Iran and internationally, to raise the cry of “Tuesdays Against Executions” louder by actively supporting this campaign and to prioritise expanding this movement, despite the regime’s efforts to suppress it.

We express our deep concern for the fate of political prisoners who have played a pivotal role in launching this campaign and have now been transferred to unknown locations. We urge everyone not to abandon the families of executed prisoners and members of the campaign.

The lives of political prisoners in Ghezel Hesar and other prisons in Iran are in grave danger.

We call on prisoners everywhere to follow the example of the resilient women and inmates in Qarchak and Greater Tehran Prisons by holding ceremonies and not allowing the blood of the proud ones who were hanged to be trampled or the voices of the campaign’s founders to be silenced in obscurity.

The key to victory for freedom, equality, and pushing back against tyranny and reaction is collective unity and solidarity.
