The Court of Appeals upholds the sentences of Hoda Amid and Najmeh Vahedi

Breathing in Confinement: The sentences of two women rights activists, Hoda Amid and Najmeh Vahedi, were upheld by Tehran’s Court of Appeals. Hoda Amid, a lawyer and women’s rights activist, and Najmeh Vahedi, a women’s rights activist, were previously sentenced to 15 years in prison as well as two years band from social activities, by Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Branch 36 of Tehran’s Court of Appeals, upheld the sentences of Najmeh Vahedi and Hoda Amid.
Hoda Amid, a lawyer and women’s rights activist, was previously sentenced by Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran to eight years in prison as well as two years of the band from some social rights, including practicing as a lawyer.
The Revolutionary Court in Tehran presided over by Judge Salavati, also sentenced Najmeh Vahedi, a sociologist and women’s rights activist, to seven years in prison as well as two years of the band from certain social activities.
Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran has charged them with “collaborating with the hostile US government against the Islamic Republic on the issue of women and the family.”
Prior to their arrest, Hoda Amid and Najmeh Vahedi were involved in organizing “marriage rights workshops” for women.
The two women’s rights activists were arrested by Revolutionary Guards in the summer of 2018 and later in October of the same year, were released on bail from Ward 2A of Evin Prison, awaiting the court’s decision.
