To serve their jail sentences, Ashraf Nafari and Alieh Motalebzadeh are arrested and transferred to Evin Prison

Breathing in Confinement: On October 12, 2020, after appearing at Evin Prison Prosecutor’s Office, Ashraf Nafari, a mathematics student at Khajeh Nasir University in Tehran, and Alieh Motalebzadeh, a photographer and women’s rights activist, were arrested and transferred to Evin Prison.
On April 26, 2020, Ms. Nafri, a student at Khajeh Nasir University, was arrested by the security police on charge of tweeting critical posts. After a week of temporary detention in Qarchak Prison in Varamin, she was temporarily released on bail of 500 million Toman, pending the trial. She was later sentenced to four months in prison on charges of propaganda against the regime at Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran, headed by Judge Iman Afshari. However, as she accepted the verdict, her prison sentence was reduced to three months.
In addition, to serve her jail sentence, Alieh Motalebzadeh, a women’s rights activist, was transferred to Evin Prison on October 12, 2020. Previously in 2017, Ms. Motalebzadeh had also been sentenced to three years in prison by the Revolutionary Court in Tehran. Therefore, according to Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, the most severe punishment, ie 2 years of imprisonment, will be applicable to her.
On November 26, 2016 after receiving a telephone summons from the Ministry of Intelligence, Alieh Motalebzadeh was arrested. She however, was released on bail of 300 on December 19 of the same year.
Ms. Motalebzadeh, on charges of gathering, colluding and propaganda against the regime, was sentenced to three years in prison by Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran and the sentence was upheld by Branch 36 of the Court of Appeals.
