Vahid Asgahri sentenced to 18 years in prison

Breathing in Confinement – After nearly seven years of detention and uncertainty, Vahid Asghari has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.

According to the report of “Breathing in a Confinement”, the student of informatics who is imprisoned in Rajai Shahr prison, was notified of his sentence on 7th December, last Sunday evening, by Branch 28 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran.

According to the verdict, Vahid Asghari, File Number 87/9631 T D, the son of Mohammad, born in Tehran in 1986, according to paragraph (b) of Article 639 of the Penal Code on charge of corruption on earth, to 10 years imprisonment, according to Article 513, for  sacrilege to 5 years imprisonment, and according to Article 532 and 535, and ton he charge of forging passports for 3 years in prison and, therefore, he was sentenced to a total of 18 years in prison.

He was arrested on 8th May 2008, at Imam Khomeini International Airport by officers from the Ministry of Intelligence, when he was going to return back to India for submitting his dissertation and doing his graduation affairs.

Vahid Asghari was twice sentenced to death, in 2011 and 2012, by Judge Salvati in Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran but at both times the verdicts were overturned by the Supreme Court.

That is to say, before trial, Vahid Asghari was forced, under physical and psychological pressure, to confess against himself in front of the TV cameras, which was condemned by the “Reporters Without Borders”.
