Breathing in Confinement: On the eve of the execution of two political prisoners, Mohammad Taghavi Sangdehi and Akbar Daneshvar Kar, reports indicate that special guard forces at Ghezel Hesar Prison have raided the political prisoners’ ward and transferred a number of inmates to undisclosed locations.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, on the evening of Sunday, 29 March 2026, prior to the scheduled execution of these two political prisoners—who are also members of the Tuesdays Against Execution campaign—special guard forces entered Ward 4 of the political prisoners and transferred several inmates to unknown locations without providing explanations or transparent information. This action has intensified concerns regarding the safety of other prisoners.
In light of recent statements by judicial authorities, including the head of the judiciary, emphasising the need for the “timely and uncompromised enforcement of sentences,” alongside the prevailing tense atmosphere, concerns have grown about the imminent execution of other political prisoners on death row. Such a process, in the absence of transparency, access to legal counsel, and adherence to fair trial standards, may constitute a violation of fundamental human rights, including the right to life and the right to a fair trial.
Breathing in Confinement, while expressing serious concern about the situation of political prisoners—particularly those sentenced to death—calls on all human rights organisations and international mechanisms to utilise their legal and diplomatic capacities to take immediate, effective, and coordinated action to halt executions and ensure the protection of prisoners’ fundamental rights.
