Nationwide uprising: Mohammad Khani, a political prisoner imprisoned in ward eight of Evin prison, has been injured and is denied medical treatment

Breathing in Confinement: On Saturday, October 15, 2022, during an attack by the security forces on the prisoners of Evin prison, Mohammad Khani, a translator and a doctoral student of social welfare at Allameh Tabatabaei University, was shot and injured by birdshot pellets, and so far, has not received any medical care.

 

According to “Breathing in Confinement”, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, on Saturday, October 15, during an attack by the security forces on the prisoners of Evin prison, Mohammad Khani, a translator and a doctoral student of social welfare at Allameh Tabatabaei University, was shot and injured by birdshot pellets, and so far, has not received any medical care.

 

Mohammad Khani, PhD student at Allameh Tabatabaei University, translator and social researcher, was arrested and transferred to Evin prison on June 22, 2022, to serve his sentence. He was sentenced to 4 years in prison (of which 3 and a half years are enforceable), two years of ban on social and political activities, six months of mandatory teaching the mentally disabled children, as well as seizing of all his confiscated belonging for two years. Mr. Khani’s lawyer was notified of his sentence on December 27, 2020.

 

The sentence was issued by Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court headed by Judge Afshari. According to which Mr. Khani was sentenced to 3 years and six months in prison for “gathering and colluding to commit a crime against the security of the country”, and to 6 months imprisonment for “propaganda activity against the regime”. He was also sentenced to one month of imprisonment and two years of banning from social and political activities, six months of mandatory teaching the mentally disabled children, and seizing all his confiscated belonging for two years.

 

While arresting Mr. Khani, security agents searched his home and confiscated some of his personal belongings including a mobile phone, a laptop, an external computer hard drive, two internal hard drives, several books written by him which were all published inside the country, a large number of CD archives containing articles, his own research articles and a lot of scientific books as well as family photos, some of his master’s university pamphlets, and his diaries. As per the verdict, all these items will remain in the custody of the security forces for two years.

 

The court hearing on Mohammad Khani’s charges was held on December 30, 2019, in branch 26 of the Revolution Court in Tehran, presided over by Judge Afshari.

 

Mohammad Khani was arrested on November 11, 2020, in the attack of Tharlallah Guards affiliated to the Ministry of Intelligence on his home, and after 41 days, on December 20, 2020, he was temporarily released from Evin prison by posting a bail of 300 million tomans awaiting the court’s decision.

 

It is noteworthy that Mohammad Khani, a PhD student in social welfare policy at Allameh University, is a researcher in the field of welfare and government policies and has written and translated many relevant books and articles. “Social Theory in the Twentieth Century by Patrick Baret” published by “Rokhdad-e New,” and “Culture and Planning by Simone Abram” published by “Tisa” are examples of books translated by Mr Khani.
