“No to Execution Tuesdays”: Hunger Strike by Political Prisoners Expands to 40 Prisons Nationwide, Accompanied by Protests from Families of Death Row Inmates in Tehran and Saqqez

Breathing in Confinement – On Tuesday, 15 April 2025, as the hunger strike by political prisoners expanded to 40 prisons across the country, families of political prisoners sentenced to death also held protest gatherings in Tehran and Saqqez.

According to the Statistics Centre of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran (Breathing in Confinement), during the 64th week of the “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign, the hunger strike expanded to 40 prisons with the participation of prisoners from Azbarom Prison in Lahijan and the women’s ward of Zahedan Prison. Simultaneously, families of political prisoners sentenced to death gathered in protest outside Evin Prison and in 15 Khordad Park in Saqqez to voice their opposition to the execution orders issued for their loved ones.

In a statement, the political prisoners declared:

“The widespread and blatant violations of human rights in Iran that we witness on a daily basis are a serious warning to society, human rights activists, and international organisations. The world’s inaction and silence in the face of this situation only serve to strengthen authoritarian rule and increase the number of victims among the oppressed people of Iran and those in prison.”

Hunger strikes were reported in the following prisons:
Greater Tehran, Evin (women’s ward and wards 4, 6, and 8), Qezel Hesar (units 3 and 4), Karaj Central, Khorramabad, Naqadeh, Khoy, Mashhad, Saqqez, Ardabil, Qaemshahr, Urmia, Marivan, Kamyaran, Baneh, Salmas, Military Prison, Adelabad in Shiraz (women’s and men’s wards), Rasht (women’s and men’s wards), Bam, Tabriz, Arak, Kahnuj, Asadabad, Dastgerd Isfahan, Tabas, Khorin Varamin, Rudsar, Ahvaz (women’s and men’s wards), Ramhormoz, Talesh, Borazjan, Joveyn, Gonbad-e Kavus, Kermanshah, Qazvin, Miandoab, Azbarom Lahijan, and the women’s ward of Zahedan Prison.

In other developments:

  • Parents of school students gathered in front of the Secretariat of the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution in Tehran to protest the inclusion of all final exams in Year 11 in national assessments.

  • Bulk cement transporters from Khuzestan Cement Company held a protest against what they called an ill-considered decision by Ramhormoz City’s Traffic Council, which banned them from using the road between Ramhormoz and Bandar-e Khomeini.
