Breathing in Confinement – The hunger strike of political prisoners participating in the Tuesdays Against Execution campaign has continued into its 97th week, now involving detainees in 55 prisons across the country.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, 97 weeks have passed since the launch of the protest campaign Tuesdays Against Execution. Political prisoners in dozens of prisons have kept this campaign alive through hunger strikes and acts of civil resistance. Their latest statement comes at a time when a wave of executions, intensified repression on university campuses, and threats against political and student activists highlight once again the urgent need for collective resistance to state-organised violence.

On the eve of 7 December (Student Day)—a symbol of the student movement’s long struggle against authoritarianism—political prisoners call on society to join them in ensuring that the voice of “No to Execution” is heard louder than ever, and to help pave the way for freedom.

Continuation of the Tuesdays Against Execution Campaign in Its 97th Week in 55 Prisons

We begin the 97th week of the Tuesdays Against Execution campaign on the eve of 7 December, Student Day. Since 7 December 1953, universities have remained the beating heart and frontline of the struggle against dictatorship. On this day, we honour the memory of all those who lost their lives in the pursuit of freedom—especially students who were forcibly disappeared, including Saeed Zeinali, who was disappeared during the 1999 attack on the Tehran University dormitories.

He is just one example among hundreds of students and citizens who have been victimised by the ruling authorities—a profound injustice inflicted upon families and grieving mothers. Yet repression, imprisonment, and execution have not stopped students from continuing their fight for freedom. Even now, universities are once again under attack, and Ehsan Faridi, a 23-year-old student and political prisoner, is facing the threat of execution simply for demanding freedom.

Over the past week, we witnessed an alarming surge in executions. In just ten days, nearly 100 prisoners have been executed by the ruling dictatorship, including two women. One execution was carried out in public to instil fear among the population. With this latest escalation, the number of executions since 20 March 2025 has reached 1,564, an unprecedented figure in the past three decades—sparking international condemnation of Iran’s criminal use of the death penalty.

Given this widespread wave of executions, we call on political groups, student activists, and all people of conscience to stand with prisoners sentenced to death and to support bereaved families seeking justice. Let the voice of “No to Execution” be amplified in every possible form, so that the regime’s primary instrument of repression is weakened and the path toward freedom and people’s sovereignty becomes clearer.
