An updated report on the situation of 30 protesters arrested in Tabriz

Breathing in Confinement: More than a week after the protest rallies held in Tabriz in support of the uprisings in Khuzestan, some of the activists and protesters are still in the custody of the security forces. On July 24, 2021, despite the heavy presence of counterinsurgency forces and widespread repression, the people of Tabriz rallied in support of the uprisings in Khuzestan.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, a week after the protests in Tabriz, a number of activists and protesters are still in detention.
A few days before the protests dozens of activists in various cities in Azerbaijan, including Tabriz, Urmia, and Ardabil, were threatened over the phone, summoned, or even arrested.
The activists in Azerbaijan have so far, identified 30 detainees whose names as well as some explanations about their conditions are as follows:
Mohammad Mahmoodi
He was arrested and transferred to an unknown location by security agents on Saturday, July 24, 2021, during the street protests in the city of Tabriz, and was released from Tabriz prison on Monday, July 26, on 30 million Toman bail awaiting the trial.
Hadi Mohammadi, Vahid Mohammadi, Hossein Qarcheh Daghi and Javad Dehghan
They were arrested during the protests on July 24, 2021, in the city of Tabriz and after being notified of the charge of “disturbing public order,” were released on bail of 30 million Tomans each, on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 27 and 28, awaiting the trial.
Olduz Ghasemi
She was arrested by intelligence agents on Saturday, July 24, 2021, and was temporarily released from prison on Wednesday, July 28, on 100 million Toman bail awaiting the court’s decision.
Shahin Barzegar
An activist living in Tabriz-Azerbaijan was arrested by security forces on the afternoon of July 22, 2021, and was released on bail from the Tabriz Intelligence Detention Center on July 31.
Siamak Kushi
He was detained by the agents of Ministry of Intelligence and released after several hours of interrogation. He however, was arrested again by the IRGC’s intelligence agents and transferred to an unknown location. He was released from Tabriz prison on Monday, July 26, 2021, on bail of 100 million pending the court’s decision.
Samad Ladvandi
He was arrested on July 24, 2021 during the protests in the city of Tabriz and was temporarily released after several hours of interrogation.
Davood Rahimi
He was arrested by security forces on Saturday, July 24, 2021, during street protests in the city of Tabriz. The exact reasons for his arrest are yet to be known. A social media page linked to the Ark Human Rights Society, reported the release of this activist on bail of 40 million Tomans on Tuesday, July 27, pending the trial.
Shahruz Barzegar
He was arrested on the street on July 24, 2021, and transferred to Tabriz Central Prison. In a case opened against him in Branch 16 of the Public and Revolutionary court in Tabriz, a bail of 150 million Tomans was issued for him. However, as Mr. Barzegar’s family failed to deposit the bail, he is still being held in Tabriz prison.
Amin Sattari Raouf
This activist living in Tabriz, was arrested by security forces on July 22, 2021, while the exact reasons for his detention as well as his whereabouts are still unknown.
Vahid Abhari
He was arrested by security forces on July 22, 2021, in the city of Tabriz.
The exact reasons for his detention as well as his whereabouts are yet to be known.
Mujtaba Abdoli
This activist was arrested by security forces on July 22, 2021, in the city of Bostan Abad in Tabriz. There is no information on the reasons for his arrest or his whereabouts.
Ashkan Saadat Mehr and Akbar Gholizadeh
These two activists were detained by security forces on July 23, 2021, at around 11:30 p.m., on Ataiee Street in Urmia, and were released after a few hours of being interrogated at the Intelligence Office.
Karim Ismailzadeh
On Saturday, July 24, 2021, on a social media page attributed to him, named “Karim Boxer,” it was announced that he had been summoned to the Intelligence Office in Tabriz and that there was no information on his condition. A day later, his arrest was confirmed by his relatives too. Mr. Esmailzadeh was released on bail on Tuesday, July 27, after being tried in Branch 16 of the Public and Revolutionary Court in Tabriz.
Rahim Sasani, Yashar Piri, Sadollah Sasani, Mohsen Abbaspour and Mohammad Pourali
These 5 activists living in Tabriz were arrested on July 22, 2021 at around 22:00 in the city of Khajeh, located 20 km from Tabriz. At the time of their arrest, their car was searched and afterward, they were transferred to the IRGC Intelligence Detention Center in Tabriz to be released a day later at 7:00 a.m. after their cell phones were confiscated.
Yousef Salahshur
On July 25, 2021, security agents arrested Mr. Salahshour at his home, and confiscated some of his personal belongings. This civil activist, in a short phone call on Wednesday, July 28, informed his family of his transfer to the detention center of the Intelligence Office in Tabriz.
Reza Shahrivar and Mohammad Kazemi
These two activists were arrested by security forces on Tuesday, July 27, 2021, in the city of Tabriz. Their whereabouts as well as the reason for their detention are yet to be known, though it is thought to be related to street protests in Azerbaijan.
Mohammad Mardi and Nader Sadeghian
These two activists living in Tabriz were arrested by security forces at their home on Monday, July 26, 2021, at 1:00 AM. The exact reasons for the detention of these activists are not known.
Saleh Ekrami and Babak Rezaei
On the afternoon of Tuesday, July 27, 2021, without presenting a court order, security forces arrested the activists, Saleh Ekrami and Babak Rezaei, at their workplace, in Nasim town in Tehran, and transferred them to an unknown location. After their arrest, security forces searched their homes and confiscated some of their personal belongings.
Parviz Siabi Gorjan
This activist was arrested by security forces in the City of Ardabil on the afternoon of Sunday, July 25, 2021. The exact reasons for his arrest and his whereabouts are yet to be known.
According to local sources in Tabriz, the number of detainees in the city of Tabriz only on the day of July 24, 2021 was more than 150, some of whom including Zahra Khadem, Amir Mohammad Khalilzadeh, Yashar Khalilzadeh, Pouya Khodaei, Mokhtar Molaei, Masoumeh Shahed, were released after a few hours without signing an obligation or having been legally pursued. Ms. Golzar’s name also has been mentioned on the human rights social media in Azerbaijan as one of the detainees.
On July 24, 2021, protest rallies were held in various areas in Tabriz in support of the uprisings in Khuzestan.
The protests in Khuzestan, began on Thursday, July 15, 2021 and rapidly spread to various cities in the country, details of which was reported by “Breathing in Confinement” on a daily basis.
