Breathing in Confinement – On Monday, 14 April 2025, at least five prisoners sentenced to death for drug-related offences were transferred from the general wards of Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj to solitary confinement in preparation for their executions.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, the identities of the five prisoners transferred for imminent execution have been confirmed as follows:
1. Rouhollah Moradian – from Andimeshk
2. Reza Sarlak – from Kuhdasht
3. Ali Doustian – from Harsin
4. Alireza Shahbazi (45 years old) – from Kuhdasht
5. Ghorban Karami Nasr (50 years old) – from Kuhdasht

Reliable sources suggest that the number of prisoners transferred to solitary confinement may exceed five, but as of the time this report was prepared, the identities of additional individuals have not been confirmed. Investigations are ongoing.

These individuals were previously arrested in connection with drug-related cases and sentenced to death through judicial proceedings widely criticised for lacking fair trial standards. Human rights organisations have repeatedly expressed concern over Iran’s extensive use of the death penalty in drug-related cases, often without even the most basic guarantees of due process and the rights of the accused.

Breathing in Confinement expresses deep concern over the rising number of executions and urges human rights organisations, international bodies, and human rights defenders to take immediate action and apply diplomatic pressure to prevent these executions.
