Breathing in Confinement — Concurrent with the ninety-fourth week of the “Tuesdays Against Execution” hunger-strike campaign, political prisoners in 54 prisons across the country went on hunger strike, and at the national level at least 19 protest gatherings and marches were held.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, alongside the gathering of families of political prisoners sentenced to death protesting against unjust death sentences, the ninety-fourth week of the “Tuesdays Against Execution” hunger-strike campaign was held in 54 prisons across the country. This campaign continued on the eve of the anniversary of the bloody November 2019 uprising.

In their statement, the political prisoners declared that only in the past week, 72 people, including one woman, have died on the gallows. With the aim of ending state killings, the political prisoners have begun their hunger strike and are calling for the immediate halt of executions.

This hunger strike was held in the following prisons: Evin (Wards 6 and 7), Ghezel Hesar (Units 2, 3 and 4), Karaj Central, Fardis (Karaj), Greater Tehran, Qarchak, Khorin (Varamin), Chubindar (Qazvin), Ahar, Arak, Langarud (Qom), Khorramabad, Borujerd, Yasuj, Asadabad (Isfahan), Dastgerd (Isfahan), Sheiban (Ahvaz), Sepidar (Ahvaz – women’s and men’s wards), Nezam (Shiraz), Adelabad (Shiraz – women’s and men’s wards), Firuzabad (Fars), Dehdasht, Zahedan (women’s and men’s wards), Borazjan, Ramhormoz, Behbahan, Bam, Yazd, Kahnooj, Tabas, Mashhad, Sabzevar, Gonbad-e Kavus, Qaemshahr, Rasht (women’s and men’s wards), Rudsar, Haviq (Talesh), Azbarom (Lahijan), Dizelabad (Kermanshah), Ardabil, Tabriz, Urmia, Salmas, Khoy, Naqadeh, Miandoab, Mahabad, Bukan, Saqqez, Baneh, Marivan, Sanandaj, Kamyaran and Ilam.

Also, a number of civil activists and the families of political prisoners Taher Naqavi and Vadood Asadi held the fourth day of their gathering and sit-in in front of Evin Prison. In support of these political prisoners’ hunger strike, and in protest at judicial limbo and the denial of legal rights, including access to medical care, they held a gathering. Security forces attacked the demonstrators, assaulted them and tore their placards, and arrested at least four people, including Abbas Lisani, Ali Kheirjou, Yousef Kari and Behzad Dashti.

Employees of the State Welfare Organisation in the cities of Shiraz, Tehran, Qorveh, Tabriz, Isfahan, Khorramabad, Marand, Kabudarahang, Bostanabad, Khorramdarreh and Gonabad went on strike and held gatherings in protest at low pay, harsh working conditions, the lack of hardship allowances, and discrimination.

In Mashhad, nurses and medical staff of Imam Reza Hospital held a gathering and march to protest difficult living conditions, calling for tariff reform and improvements to their employment situation.

In Kermanshah, Social Security retirees gathered to protest low pensions, discrimination and inequality, poverty, inflation and high prices. They called for the Social Security Organisation to be removed from government monopoly, for Article 89 of the Social Security Law to be amended regarding health-care services, and for improvements to welfare services. Protesters chanted slogans including: “Our enemy is right here; they lie that it’s America,” “They looted Iran and ruined us,” and “We want neither war nor killing; we want lasting welfare.”

Around three thousand contract workers of the refineries of Phases 1 to 12 of the South Pars Gas Complex held a march and protest, calling for a review of the job-classification plan, implementation of the “two weeks on – two weeks off” rotational scheme, regularisation of the status of hire-car drivers, payment of camp allowances and provision of transport.

Employees of the Iranian Offshore Oil Company in the operational areas of Nosrat and Ilam platforms in the Siri region also held a gathering to protest incomplete wage payments, pay injustice, inflation and high prices, and the privatisation of health services in the oil industry. They called for full implementation of operational-area allowances, removal of pay caps, full payment of end-of-service benefits, cancellation of pension deductions, return of unlawfully deducted taxes, and implementation of Article 10 of the Law on the Duties and Powers of the Ministry of Oil.

At the Jam Gas Refinery, workers together with their families also held a protest gathering, calling for full payment of wages, removal of pay caps, payment of end-of-service benefits, cancellation of pension deductions, return of unlawful taxes, and full implementation of Article 10.
