Breathing in Confinement, Sunday 4 May 2025 – Following the Supreme Court’s confirmation of the death sentence of a 19-year-old prisoner, preparations are underway for the public execution to take place in Bukan.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, the Bukan prosecutor announced on Sunday, 4 May 2025, that the death sentence of a prisoner convicted of murdering a 6-year-old child named Nian will soon be carried out in public. The Supreme Court has upheld the verdict.
This case relates to the tragic murder of Nian, a 6-year-old girl from Bukan, who was killed on Thursday, 16 January 2025. A man and the child’s stepmother were arrested on suspicion of the crime. The main suspect is a 19-year-old man from Saqqez, identified by the initials A.K., who faces charges including murder and sexual abuse.
The Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran has expressed serious concern over the increasing use of the death penalty, particularly its public implementation, and has called for an immediate response from relevant international bodies and figures. It urges the UN Secretary-General, the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran to take a firm stance and act against this new wave of executions and the revival of public hangings in Iran.
The League stresses that public executions not only violate human dignity but also contribute to the normalisation of violence in society.
