Breathing in Confinement: Political prisoner Peyman Ganji, one of those arrested during the nationwide protests in January 2026, has been sentenced to death.

According to reporters for Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Peyman Ganji was sentenced to death by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Iman Afshari, on the charge of “moharebeh” (“enmity against God”).

According to the available information, the indictment cites “setting fire to public property” as the conduct constituting the offence of moharebeh. The interpretation and classification of such conduct under the legal definition of moharebeh, however, has long been the subject of debate and differing opinions among legal scholars.

The case is currently under review by Branch 9 of the Supreme Court following the filing of an appeal. Accordingly, the death sentence is not considered final unless and until it is upheld by the Supreme Court.

Peyman Ganji, aged 33, was arrested by security forces during the nationwide protests in January 2026. Following interrogation, he was transferred to Greater Tehran Prison.

Further details regarding the judicial proceedings, including the defendant’s access to legal counsel and the conditions under which the court hearings were conducted, have not yet been officially disclosed.
