Breathing in Confinement – At dawn on Wednesday, 9 April 2025, the death sentences of at least five prisoners who had been convicted of murder were carried out in Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least five prisoners were executed early Wednesday morning in Ghezel Hesar Prison. Their identities have been confirmed by Breathing in Confinement as Bahram Hedavand Khani, Sajjad Akbari, Mehdi Salan, Salar Amir Jalali, and Abolfazl Karimi.
According to the report, Bahram Hedavand Khani, a resident of Varamin, father of two, had been arrested 17 years ago on murder charges and sentenced to death. He had been transferred to solitary confinement for execution several times, and each time was returned to the general ward after obtaining a temporary stay in hopes of securing a pardon from the victim’s family. Ultimately, his family was unsuccessful in gaining consent.
Sajjad Akbari had previously also been arrested and sentenced to death for murder.
Mehdi Salan, a resident of the Yakhchi Abad district of Tehran, Abolfazl Karimi, a resident of Karaj, and Salar Amir Jalali, from Tehran, had likewise been arrested on murder charges and sentenced to death.
Breathing in Confinement had reported the previous day that 10 prisoners had been transferred to solitary confinement in Ghezel Hesar Prison for execution. According to this reports, the executions of some of these prisoners — mainly those convicted of drug-related offenses — have been temporarily halted, and they were returned to the general ward. However, the death sentences of the remaining prisoners were carried out at dawn on Wednesday, 9 April 2025, in Ghezel Hesar Prison, Karaj.
As of the time of this report, the execution of these prisoners has not been announced by official resources.
Annual Report on Executions in Iran
According to the annual report by the Statistics Centre of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 1,170 individuals were executed in Iran in 2024. Among them, five people were executed in public, and the executed also included 38 women and 9 juvenile offenders.
