Breathing in Confinement – The death sentence of Mehran Bahramian, a political prisoner and one of those arrested during the nationwide protests of 2022, was carried out at dawn on Saturday, 6 September 2025, on the charge of enmity against God (moharebeh).
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, citing Mizan News Agency, he was accused of killing a Special Forces officer named Mohsen Rezaei and was sentenced to death by hanging.
Bahramian’s case was initially heard in one of the branches of the Revolutionary Court in Isfahan, where he was sentenced to death. After the ruling was overturned by the Supreme Court, the case was retried in a parallel court, which again issued a death sentence, later upheld by the Supreme Court. The report did not specify the location where the execution was carried out. The judicial proceedings were marred by a lack of transparency, violations of the defendant’s right to defence, and denial of a fair trial.
Mehran Bahramian and his brother Fazel were arrested during the 2022 protests. Another brother, Morad Bahramian, was killed during the protests by direct fire from security forces. Informed sources reported that after his arrest, Mehran was subjected to severe physical torture, including a broken rib and a ruptured eardrum.
His execution formed part of the state’s policy of repression and intimidation of society, in violation of Iran’s international obligations prohibiting torture and protecting the right to life and the right to a fair trial.
Mehran Bahramian’s body was buried secretly by security forces without informing his family — a further violation of the family’s right to access their loved one’s body and to hold a funeral.
