Breathing in Confinement: On November 17, after his sentence was suspended, the political prisoner Mohammad Nourizad was released from Evin Prison. On the same day before the release of Mohammad Nourizad, his son Ali Nourizad was returned to the Greater Tehran Prison at the end of his leave.

 

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, on November 17, 2021, the political prisoner Mohammad Nourizad, was released from Evin Prison after his prison sentence was suspended. Prior to his release, his son Ali Nourizad was returned to the Greater Tehran Prison after completing his leave.

 

Mohammad Nourizad, who suffers from the diseases such as asthma, heart problems and high blood pressure, had previously injured his head and face while visiting his family to protest his deprivation of medical care, saying that he would injure himself everyday so that if the aim of the government was his death, it would be achieved sooner.

 

Earlier, Javid Rehman, the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran, as well as the UN Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhumane, or degrading treatment or punishment, along with a number of other UN experts, issued a statement calling for the release of Mr. Nourizad. They stated that Mr. Nourizad’s health condition was so critical that if he continued to be denied medical treatment and care, he would risk serious complications and even death.

 

On August 11, 2019, Mohammad Nourizad was arrested and transferred to Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad following the publication of a statement known as the 14-signature statement calling for Ali Khamenei’s resignation. Last year, he was transferred from Mashhad Prison to Tehran Prison.

 

In the first part of his case, Branch 4 of the Revolutionary Court of Mashhad, presided over by Judge Mansouri, charged Mr. Nourizad with “offending the founder of the Islamic Republic, Offending the Sacred, offending the Supreme Leader, disturbing public mind, cooperating with foreign media, and participating in illegal gatherings,” for which he was sentenced to 15 years in prison, 3 years in exile in Izeh, as well as 3-year ban from leaving the country. Later, Branch 35 of the Court of Appeals in Khorasan Razavi reduced the sentence to 15 years in prison, 2 years in exile in Izeh, and  2-year ban on leaving the country.

 

In August 2020, in the second part of his case, which was opened against him because of appearing in front of the Court of Appeal held on the case against Kamal Jafari Yazdi, the Criminal Court 2 in Mashhad sentenced Mr. Nourizad to 8 months in prison, 74 lashes and deport to Tabas on charge of “disturbing public order.” He was also sentenced to 74 lashes on charge of “spreading lies.” His sentences were finally upheld by the Court of Appeal in Khorasan Razavi.

 

 

Mr. Nourizad’s son, Ali Nourizad, was arrested by security forces in Tehran on Sunday, January 12, 2020, during a protest rally against the downing of a Ukrainian plane by the IRGC Air Defense. On February 2, 2020, Ali was released on bail, pending the trial. He was finally sentenced by the Revolutionary Court of Tehran to 3.5 years in prison. His sentence was later upheld by the Court of Appeals in Tehran. On October 3, 2020, after appearing in the Judgment Enforcement Unit of the Evin Court, he was transferred to the Greater Tehran Prison to serve his sentence.
