According to “Breathing in Confinement”, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, on Saturday, July 3, during the first hearing of the charges against Ali Younesi and Amir Hossein Moradi, two Sharif University students, Mr. Nili and Taj, Ali Younesi’s lawyers, and Mr. Habibnejad, Amir Hossein Moradi’s lawyer, defended their clients.

According to Mr. Nili, since the final defense was not presented, another session also will be scheduled.

“The defendants were charged with corruption on earth, gathering and conspiracy to commit crimes against national security, as well as propaganda activities against the regime,” said Mr. Nili.

“First, Amir Hossein Moradi was questioned, and after his defense and that of his lawyer, Ali Younesi was questioned, for which my colleague and I defended,” said Mr. Nili. He added: “In addition, during the hearing, we requested the verdict to be changed, or else the transfer of clients from Security Ward 209 to the General Ward, to which the judge replied that a decision would be made after the investigation.”

On July 3rd, “Breathing in a Confinement” published a report on the trial of the two students:

The hearing on the charges against these two students, had been scheduled for April 10. However, as they were not sent to the court, the session was canceled. Mustafa Nili wrote: “As in this case, the charge against the defendants is corruption on earth, the legal principles for the hearing to be held, including presence of more than one judge as well as some other legal formalities have to be followed. However, even though we, the lawyers and the clients, had been notified of the hearing date, the defendants were not sent to court, and therefore, the hearing unfortunately, was not convened.”

Ali Younesi, a computer engineering student, and Amir Hossein Moradi, a physics student at Sharif University of Technology, were arrested on April 10, 2020, by the agents of Ministry of Intelligence, and were transferred to Evin Prison’s Ward 209, the Ministry’s Detention Center. While being arrested, the two students are said to have been beaten by the plainclothes agents who even refused to present an arrest warrant.

It is worth mentioning that Amir Hossein Moradi is the winner of the silver medal of the 2017 National Astronomy Olympiad and Ali Younesi is the winner of the silver medal of the 2016 National Astronomy Olympiad as well as the gold medal of the 2017 Astronomy Olympiad.
