Breathing in Confinement: On Tuesday, April 11, 2023, Ali Younesi and Amir Hossein Moradi, two elite imprisoned students, sent a voice message from Evin prison on the occasion of the third anniversary of their imprisonment.

According to “Breathing in Confinement” the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, these two students, referring to the difficult days they have gone through, said in this message: After all the sufferings and hardships in these years, we believe that the moment of true happiness will come, the beautiful sun of freedom will rise, and a free Iran will be realized.

Below is the full text of their message:

On April 10, 2020, after being severely beaten we were arrested and transferred to Ward 209. In total, we spent more than two years in solitary cells, and in the third year we were transferred to the general ward of Evin prison.

In these three years, we have gone through an eventful path. Those difficult days after the arrest, when at the beginning of our youth we were transferred from the university classroom to solitary cells, we asked ourselves that how many people’s sufferings and torture these stone walls, built more than 50 years ago, have witnessed? These walls have hosted loving people who faced hardships for the freedom of Iran. Those who with their resistance turned Evin into a common symbol of oppression in two dictatorships.

While being tortured, pressurized, and threaten to be executed, we saw ourselves as a drop of a roaring river trying to reach the beautiful plain of freedom by breaking the dam of dictatorship which has blocked the path of Iran’s history.

In those difficult days, your support, dear people of Iran, became our source of encouragement. Your support was a strong barrier between us and the gallows, a barrier that was not weakened by time, so that we owe you our whole life and this is a great honor for us. We hope and strive to be worthy of this unreserved support.

We were saved from many dangers in the arms of your love and support, so that we feel indebted to you more than ever and we promise not to worry about our freedom until the day we celebrate the freedom of Iran together. We promise to remember every moment those children who are much more deserving than us to get academic titles, but poverty and discrimination have taken away all the opportunities from them.

We, like all the youths who were killed in the streets, have no dream but the freedom of Iran, and compared to them, resisting in prison is a small duty on our shoulders.

After all the sufferings and hardships in these years, we believe that the moment of true happiness will come, the beautiful sun of freedom will rise, and a free Iran will be realized.

Your lovers, Amir Hossein and Ali
