Special Clerical Court sentences a Kurdish cleric to three years in prison

Breathing in Confinement: Rasoul Hamzehpour, a Kurdish cleric from Piranshahr, was sentenced to 3 years in prison by the Special Clerical Court of Urmia. The cleric had been arrested in the fall of 2020 and was released on a 1 billion toman bail awaiting the court’s decision.

According to the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Mamousta Rasoul Hamzehpour, the imam of Andizeh village in Piranshahr, was sentenced by the Special Clerical Court of Urmia to three years in prison on charges of “propaganda against the regime and propaganda for national and religious issues as well as his activities in social media.” He has been sentenced to imprisonment and was officially notified of this sentence in mid-March.

On Sunday, October 4, 2020, the imam of Andizeh village of Lajan district in Piranshahr, Mamousta Rasoul Hamzehpour, from Kharapa village, was arrested by intelligent agents and transferred to Urmia. After a month in custody, he was temporarily released on bail of one Billion tomans, awaiting the court’s decision.
