Breathing in Confinement: Today, Saturday, July 3, 2021, the first hearing on the charges against Ali Younesi and Amir Hossein Moradi, two detained students of Sharif University of Technology, was held in Branch 29 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran. Ali Younesi and Amir Hossein Moradi, have being held in temporarily detention in Ward 209 of Evin Prison since April 2020.

According to “Breathing in Confinement”, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, on Saturday, July 3, 2021, the first hearing of the charges against Ali Younesi and Amir Hossein Moradi, who have been temporarily detained by the Ministry of Intelligence for 450 days, was held in Branch 29 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran headed by Judge Mazlum.

“The session was held in the presence of Ali and Amir Hussein’s lawyers. After the indictment was read out by the Deputy Prosecutor and the two detained students were notified of their charges, they defended themselves and afterward, their lawyers presented their defense,” said an informed source to the reporter of “Breathing in Confinement”. The source added: “The trial is ongoing, and the next session’s date will be announced later.”

Earlier, “Breathing in Confinement” quoted Mustafa Nili’s post on his twitter page, that the two students’ hearing session was scheduled to be held on July 3rd. Mr. Nili added: “I met with Ali Younesi today and we talked about the trial on Saturday, July 3rd. After more than 14 months, he and Amir Hossein Moradi are still being held in Security Ward 209 of Evin Prison, and the official’s refusal to transfer them to the public ward, has made it difficult to defend them. Unfortunately, at the request of the case officer, the officials have so far prevented their transfer to the public ward.”

The hearing on the charges against these two students, had been scheduled for April 10. However, as they were not sent to the court, the session was canceled. Mustafa Nili wrote: “As in this case, the charge against the defendants is corruption on earth, the legal principles for the hearing to be held, including presence of more than one judge as well as some other legal formalities have to be followed. However, even though we, the lawyers and the clients, had been notified of the hearing date, the defendants were not sent to court, and therefore, the hearing unfortunately, was not convened.”

Ali Younesi, a computer engineering student, and Amir Hossein Moradi, a physics student at Sharif University of Technology, were arrested on April 10, 2020, by the agents of Ministry of Intelligence, and were transferred to Evin Prison’s Ward 209, the Ministry’s Detention Center. While being arrested, the two students are said to have been beaten by the plainclothes agents who even refused to present an arrest warrant.

On May 5, 2020, the judiciary spokesman, Gholamhossein Esmaili, accused these students of collaborating with the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization.

It is worth mentioning that Amir Hossein Moradi is the winner of the silver medal of the 2017 National Astronomy Olympiad and Ali Younesi is the winner of the silver medal of the 2016 National Astronomy Olympiad as well as the gold medal of the 2017 Astronomy Olympiad. In addition, Ali Younesi has brought honor for Iran by winning a gold medal in the 12th World Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad held in China.
