Breathing in Confinement: On the morning of Wednesday, December 20, Samira Sabzian, Imprisoned in Qarchak prison, was hanged. Samira, a victim of childhood marriage, was arrested and sentenced to death for murdering her husband in 2015.
According to “Breathing in Confinement,” the news outlet of Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, despite international warnings and calls from Amnesty International, Samira Sabzian was executed on the morning of Thursday, December 20, 2023.
Samira Sabzian was hanged despite the efforts of human rights activists in the past week to halt her execution. Samira, a mother of two children aged eleven and fifteen, was 32 years old at the time of the execution.
In January 2015, Samira Sabzian, along with her 14-year-old sister and another individual, was arrested on charges of murdering her husband. The case was heard in the Fourth Criminal Court of a Tehran province, with the last court session held in November 2015. According to the court’s ruling, she was sentenced to death.
Reports indicate that she was only 19 years old at the time of the crime.
The widespread excecution of prisoners represents a serious violation of human rights and prisoners’ rights by the authorities of the Islamic Republic. The international community must hold the authorities of the Islamic Republic accountable for the increasing number of executions.
According to the monthly report from the prisoner’ Rights League’s statistics center, at least 112 prisoners were executed in Iran in the month of November.
