She was previously sent on leave from Evin Prison on July 25 this year, following contracting Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to Breathing in Confinement, the news organ of the Prisoners&#8217; Rights Leaguein Iran, on Friday, September 3, 2021, Giti Pourfazel, a political prisoner and retired lawyer, returned to Evin Prison at the end of her leave.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Pourfazel was sent on leave on July 25 this year, following the outbreak of Coronavirus in the women&#8217;s ward of Evin Prison and contracting the disease. One of her relative said that although the prerequisites to grant her a parole was present, the prison authorities returned her back to prison.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Giti Pourfazel, one of the signatories of the letter calling for the resignation of Ali Khamenei, was arrested by security forces on August 19, 2019, and after more than a month of interrogation, was transferred to the women&#8217;s ward of Evin Prison. Ms. Pourfazel was finally released from Evin Prison on November 13, 2019, on 500 million Tomans bail, awaiting the trial.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She was tried by Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran, presided over by Judge Iman Afshari, and sentenced to 3 years and 6 months in prison on charge of conspiracy to commit a crime against national security and 8 months imprisonment on charge of propaganda activity against the regime, as well as two years of ban on membership in political groups.<\/p>\n<p>According to Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, of her total sentence of 4 years and 2 months imprisonment, the most severe punishment, i.e., 3 years and 6 months in prison, would be enforceable on her. Given that Ms. Pourfazel did not appeal the verdict, the sentence was finally reduced to 2 years and 3 months in prison.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Pourfazel was arrested on September 6, 2020, after appearing in the Evin Courthouse, and to serve her sentence was transferred to Evin Prison.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>4-September-2021 Newsgroup: Women &ndash; Prisoners &ndash; Breathing in Confinement: On Friday, September 3, at the end of her leave period, Giti Pourfazel, a retired lawyer and political prisoner, returned to Evin Prison.
