Breathing in Confinement \u2013 The secret execution of three prisoners took place in 2024 in Shahroud Prison. These individuals had been arrested on charges of \u201cmurder\u201d and sentenced to death.<\/p>\n

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners\u2019 Rights League in Iran, three prisoners were secretly hanged in Shahroud Prison during 2024. Their identities have been confirmed as Ali Ahani, Ali Asghar Eskandari, and Ali Ashrafi.<\/p>\n

As reported by Breathing in Confinement, Ali Ahani was originally serving a six-month sentence for involvement in a fight. While in prison, he faced additional charges of moharebeh (enmity against God) due to alleged insults against the Supreme Leader and the judge. He was sentenced to death under this charge, and the execution was carried out in February 2025 in Shahroud Prison.<\/p>\n

Another prisoner, Ali Ashrafi, had previously been arrested and sentenced to death for murder. According to a reliable source, Ashrafi was a na\u00efve individual who fell victim to someone else\u2019s scheme. The instigator reportedly told Ashrafi that his sister-in-law was a bad person and convinced him to throw a bucket of water on her as a symbolic act of purification. However, the bucket had been deliberately filled with acid. Ashrafi unknowingly threw it on the woman, which resulted in her immediate death. He was later tried for murder and sentenced to death. His execution took place in March 2025 in Shahroud Prison.<\/p>\n

The third prisoner, Ali Asghar Eskandari, had been arrested for murder committed with a firearm during a tribal conflict. His case was linked to ongoing retaliatory violence. Another defendant in the same case was sentenced to 37 years of exile imprisonment in Nikshahr Prison. Ali Asghar Eskandari was executed in November 2024 in Shahroud Prison.<\/p>\n

According to the annual report by the Statistics Centre of the Prisoners\u2019 Rights League in Iran, at least 1,170 individuals were executed in Iran in 2024.
