Breathing in Confinement \u2013<\/p>\n

At dawn on Wednesday, 21 May 2025, the death sentences of at least three prisoners were carried out in Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj. These individuals had been convicted of \u201cmurder\u201d and drug-related offences.<\/p>\n

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners\u2019 Rights League in Iran, the identities of the three executed prisoners have been confirmed as Morteza (first name only), Alim Barahouei, and Jahanshah Afshar.<\/p>\n

According to the report, Morteza, a resident of Mashhad, had been previously arrested and sentenced to death for murder. Alim Barahouei, aged 67 and from Zahedan, was arrested in 2019 on drug-related charges and sentenced to death by the Karaj Criminal Court. Jahanshah Afshar was also arrested and sentenced to death for murder.<\/p>\n

The executions were carried out in the early hours of Wednesday at Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj.<\/p>\n

According to the annual report by the Statistics Centre of the Prisoners\u2019 Rights League in Iran, at least 1,170 individuals were executed in Iran in 2024.
