Breathing in Confinement \u2013 At dawn on Tuesday, 27 May, a prisoner was publicly hanged in the city of Nourabad, the capital of Delfan County.<\/p>\n
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners\u2019 Rights League in Iran, citing state media, a prisoner convicted of \u201cenmity against God\u201d (moharebeh) through armed robbery was executed in public in Delfan County.<\/p>\n
Colonel Behrouz Bazvand, the Delfan police commander, stated that following an armed robbery of a jewellery shop on 12 September 2021, which caused widespread panic and resulted in one death and one injury near the scene, the suspect was arrested and sentenced to death on charges of moharebeh (waging war against God) and murder. The Supreme Court upheld the sentence, and the execution was carried out on Tuesday morning, 27 May.<\/p>\n
The robbery had occurred on the main street of Nourabad, where the execution was also carried out.<\/p>\n
Public executions are used as a tool to instil fear, suppress social dissent, and prevent protests. They represent a blatant violation of human rights and serve as a form of collective punishment, fostering a culture of aggression and revenge. The continued enforcement of such inhumane sentences shows that these punishments have not served as an effective deterrent to crime. According to Breathing in Confinement, at least two other public executions are currently at the implementation stage in the cities of Bukan and Malekan.<\/p>\n

Annual Report on Executions in Iran<\/strong><\/p>\n According to the annual report by the Statistics Centre of the Prisoners\u2019 Rights League in Iran, at least 1,170 individuals were executed in Iran in 2024.
