Breathing in Confinement<\/strong> \u2013 At dawn on Wednesday, 28 May 2025 (7 Khordad 1404), the death sentences of at least five prisoners previously arrested and convicted on charges related to drug offences and murder were carried out at Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj.<\/p>\n

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners\u2019 Rights League in Iran, five prisoners were hanged early Wednesday morning at Ghezel Hesar Prison. Their identities have been confirmed as Amir Hossein Mohammadi<\/strong>, Majid Bahrami<\/strong>, Seyed Abbas Laki Khosrokhani<\/strong>, Hojjat Havasigaravand<\/strong>, and Afshin Ezzati<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

According to the report, Amir Hossein Mohammadi<\/strong>, son of Farzin, had been arrested and sentenced to death on charges of murder in self-defence. He had allegedly been attacked with a machete by someone attempting to steal his mobile phone. At the time of his arrest, Amir Hossein Mohammadi was 17 years old<\/strong>, qualifying him as a juvenile offender. He was arrested five years ago and was 22 years old at the time of his execution.<\/p>\n

Majid Bahrami<\/strong>, also known as Majid Khalifeh, was a resident of Shahr-e Rey. Seyed Abbas Laki Khosrokhani<\/strong>, from Nourabad, had been transferred to solitary confinement the week prior to his execution, although the sentence had initially been postponed. Hojjat Havasigaravand<\/strong>, from Kuhdasht, and Afshin Ezzati<\/strong> had both been arrested and sentenced to death on drug-related charges. All five death sentences were carried out at dawn on Wednesday, 28 May 2025, at Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj.<\/p>\n

According to the annual report by the Statistics Centre of the Prisoners\u2019 Rights League in Iran, at least 1,170 individuals were executed in Iran in 2024.
