Breathing in Confinement<\/strong> \u2013 Death-row prisoners held in Unit 2 of Ghezel Hesar Prison<\/strong> have entered the fourth day<\/strong> of a hunger strike against executions, amid threats from officials including the Deputy Prosecutor of Tehran<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

According to Breathing in Confinement, 1,500 prisoners in Unit 2<\/strong> have refused food for the fourth consecutive day; some prisoners in Wards 3 and 4<\/strong> have sewn their lips shut<\/strong>. They have announced they will continue their strike until their death sentences are commuted to prison terms<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Hossein-zadeh, the Deputy Prosecutor of Tehran and the official in charge of carrying out executions, warned prisoner representatives that if the strike ends,<\/strong> executions would be halted for three months<\/strong>\u2014but after that, two execution rounds per month<\/strong>, 30 people in each round<\/strong>, would be carried out. He also threatened the representatives with punishment for \u201cleading the strike,\u201d saying he would \u201charass\u201d them.<\/p>\n

At the same time, reports indicate that NOPO<\/strong> forces, in addition to the prison guard units, have been deployed inside the prison.<\/strong> Although no raid on the halls has occurred so far, there is a risk of a sudden assault.<\/p>\n

Breathing in Confinement has received videos from prisoners<\/strong> calling on the public and<\/strong> international bodies<\/strong> to intervene.<\/p>\n

As part of ongoing efforts to break the strike, late Thursday night the prison\u2019s deputy director, Faraj-Nejad, reportedly went door-to-door through Unit 2, threatening prisoners and demanding an end to the strike. He told them: \u201cIf you don\u2019t break the strike, we will execute 100 of you at once.\u201d<\/p>\n

One prisoner appealed<\/strong> to the media and the public to continue supporting the strikers, warning: \u201cIf you stop supporting us, they will massacre us here.\u201d<\/strong> According to reports received by Breathing in Confinement, around 28 prisoners<\/strong> have been transferred to the infirmary due to deteriorating health; however, last night a duty officer<\/strong> allegedly beat prisoners<\/strong> and told them they were coming to the infirmary \u201cwithout reason.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Prisoners\u2019 Rights League in Iran<\/strong> reiterates its call on the international community<\/strong> and UN member states<\/strong> to take decisive action<\/strong> to stop executions in Iran.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
