The prisoner had earlier been arrested on charges of “rape” and “murder” and sentenced to death by judicial authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The identity of the prisoner is still under investigation.

Based on information received from Breathing in Confinement reporters, the prisoner had been arrested in 2018 in Borazjan on charges of raping and killing a 10-year-old girl named Sogand Tamizi. Following judicial proceedings, he was sentenced to death by public hanging. The sentence was ultimately carried out at 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday, 2 December 2025, next to the burial site of the victim.

Regardless of the nature and severity of the alleged crime, carrying out the death penalty in public constitutes a clear example of a cruel, inhuman, and degrading punishment. Under fundamental human rights principles, including those enshrined in international human rights standards, such punishment is absolutely rejected and prohibited.

Public executions not only violate the inherent human dignity of the condemned individual, but by turning punishment into a public spectacle of violence, they also expose citizens involuntarily to severe psychological harm. From this perspective, executions carried out in public amount to a form of collective punishment, contradicting the principles of criminal justice, individual criminal responsibility, and proportionality between crime and punishment.

Furthermore, claims regarding the “deterrent effect” of public executions lack credible scientific and empirical support. Such practices have not led to a reduction in crime; rather, they contribute to the normalisation of state violence within society. No one should be subjected, as a member of society, to witnessing punishment or displays of violence.

Breathing in Confinement considers this act a clear violation of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s international human rights obligations and calls for the immediate end to such inhuman and degrading punishments.

No official report

As of the time of this report, the execution of this prisoner has not been announced by official sources.

Annual Report on Executions in Iran

According to the annual report by the Statistics Centre of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 1,170 individuals were executed in Iran in 2024.
