According to received information, the families of these prisoners have been told that one of them will be executed each day — a development that has significantly heightened concerns over the imminent implementation of these sentences.

In the early hours of 2 April, the execution of Amir Hossein Hatami, one of those detained during the nationwide protests of January 2026, was carried out. He had previously been sentenced to death, along with six other defendants in the case — Mohammadamin Biglari, Shahin Vahedparast Kalur, Shahab Zahdi, Abolfazl Salehi Siavoshani, Yaser Rajaeefar, and Ali Fahim — by Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Salavati. They were charged with offences including “enmity against God” (moharebeh), “corruption on earth,” arson, and “assembly and collusion against national security.”

According to reports published by human rights sources, these individuals were arrested on 8 January 2026 and, during their detention, were reportedly subjected to torture and inhumane treatment. It has also been reported that they were denied access to legal counsel and family visits for approximately 40 days — a situation that may constitute a violation of fundamental fair trial principles, including the right to an effective defence and communication with family.

These individuals were arrested in connection with a fire at the “Basij Base 185 Mahmoud Kaveh,” located near Namjoo Street in eastern Tehran. However, independent sources have raised concerns regarding the judicial handling of the case, including reliance on confessions obtained under pressure.

Following the transfer of these prisoners to solitary confinement and the execution of Amir Hossein Hatami, concerns have sharply increased regarding the imminent execution of the remaining defendants in this case.

These developments are occurring amid ongoing war and internal and external crises, with reports indicating an increased use of the death penalty in Iran, particularly in cases related to protests. The use of capital punishment in such conditions is regarded under international law as a tool for public intimidation and the suppression of fundamental freedoms.

Breathing in Confinement, while expressing deep concern over the growing trend of issuing and carrying out death sentences, calls on international bodies, including United Nations Special Rapporteurs and other human rights mechanisms, to urgently address this situation and take effective and practical measures to halt the executions, monitor judicial proceedings, and ensure compliance with international fair trial standards.

2 April 2026News category: Prisoners Breathing in Confinement: Five political prisoners connected to the case of Amir Hossein Hatami are being held in solitary confinement while awaiting execution.
