The charges attributed to them included “enmity against God,” “cooperation with hostile groups and Israel,” “assembly and collusion against national security,” “membership in an opposition group with the intent to disrupt national security,” and “propaganda against the state.” According to the same source, after the completion of judicial proceedings and the rejection of appeals, the death sentences were carried out.

Published reports indicate that these two prisoners had also been sentenced to death in October of the previous year on charges of “membership in the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organisation of Iran.” The Mizan News Agency report further claimed that the individuals were members of an espionage network who, through social media and travel to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, had established contact with individuals affiliated with Israeli intelligence services and received training in military and security-related activities. According to the report, this training included secure communication, activity on social media, navigation, transmitting the coordinates of sensitive locations, and the construction of explosive devices. It was also alleged that the defendants had carried out actions such as setting fire to certain locations.

According to the same report, the two individuals were arrested before carrying out any operational actions, while allegedly transporting a number of explosive projectiles. It was also stated that items including ammunition, explosive projectiles, and related equipment were discovered and seized from their residences in Karaj and Isfahan, as well as from a safe house in Tehran.

In contrast, some reports and independent sources identified these individuals as “political prisoners” and rejected the attribution of charges related to cooperation with hostile groups and Israel. Furthermore, some of these reports pointed to a lack of transparency in the judicial process, including insufficient information regarding the exact time of arrest, the manner of proceedings, and the defendants’ access to legal counsel of their choosing.

Additionally, according to statements attributed to the Head of the Alborz Province Judiciary, these individuals, along with two others, were accused on 27 September 2025 of espionage in connection with the 12-day war. This is despite reports indicating that their arrest had occurred prior to this event, and that their identities had already been communicated to bodies such as the United Nations and human rights organisations.

Other reports indicate that Hamed Validi and Mohammad Masoum Shahi were arrested on 13 May 2025 in Tehran, along with several of their relatives. According to these reports, they were subjected to pressure during detention to obtain confessions and were sentenced to death without access to a fair trial or legal counsel of their choosing.

In this context, some human rights organisations and critics have expressed doubts regarding the use of charges such as “espionage” in such cases, suggesting that they may, in some instances, serve as a cover for the prosecution of political opponents.

Hamed Validi, born in 1981, originally from Kermanshah and residing in Isfahan, was a civil engineer. Mohammad Masoum (Nima) Shahi, born in 1987, originally from Tehran and residing in Karaj, was a technical worker.

20 April 2026 News Category: Executions Breathing in Confinement: The death sentences of Hamed Validi and Mohammad Masoum (Nima) Shahi, who had been prosecuted on charges including “enmity against God” (moharebeh) and “membership in the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organisation of Iran,” were carried out in the early hours of 20 April.
