Death Row Prisoner Dies in Adelabad Prison, Shiraz

Breathing in Confinement, Wednesday, 15 July 2026: A prisoner sentenced to death died after attempting suicide in Adelabad Prison in Shiraz.
According to reporters from Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Shahab Bavi, a prisoner from Abadan who had previously been arrested on drug-related charges and sentenced to death, died in Adelabad Prison in Shiraz on Wednesday, 15 July.
According to the report, before being transferred to Adelabad Prison, Shahab Bavi had been held in Lar Prison. Reports received indicate that, amid psychological pressure, harsh prison conditions, and poor mental health, he attempted suicide and subsequently died.
The lack of adequate access to specialised psychological services, counselling, and mental health support—particularly for prisoners facing severe sentences, including the death penalty—remains a persistent concern among human rights organisations regarding conditions in Iranian prisons.
Under international human rights standards, prison authorities are responsible for safeguarding the lives and physical and mental health of those in their custody and must take appropriate measures to prevent harm to prisoners, including providing adequate medical and mental healthcare.
Breathing in Confinement has previously published reports concerning suicides and deaths of prisoners amid poor prison conditions, as well as the need for the Islamic Republic of Iran to comply with its legal obligations to protect the lives and physical and mental health of prisoners.
