Breathing in Confinement: In recent days, the authorities of the Islamic Republic have started fencing around the mass graves of Khavaran with concrete walls. They have also built metal pillars around the walls to install CCTV cameras.
According to the reports, on Friday, May 27, 2022, the mass graves of political prisoners known as “Khavaran Cemetery” were fenced with concrete walls and CCTV cameras were installed around it.
The bodies of thousands of political prisoners executed in the 1980s, including those executed in the summer of 1988 massacre, have been buried in Khavaran. In the summer of 1988, Ibrahim Raisi was a member of Death Committee in Evin and Rajai Shahr prisons. Recently, a Swedish court held 93 sessions of trial for Hamid Nouri (Abbasi), one of the perpetrators of the massacre of political prisoners, who in the summer of 1988 was the Deputy Assistant Prosecutor of Rajai Shahr Prison. The court is scheduled to announce a verdict against him in early July.
For more than 3 decades, the authorities of the Islamic Republic have prevented the families of the victims of the 1988 massacre to gather for mourning in Khavaran. Furthermore, they have constantly tried to destroy mass graves in various cities of Iran under different pretexts, in order to destroy the evidence of their “crime against humanity.”
In his latest report to the UN Human Rights Council, Javaid Rehman, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran, called for the establishment of a fact-finding committee on the killing of political prisoners in the summer of 1988.
