Breathing in Confinement: As a result of not following the construction principles, the bathrooms (both baths and washrooms) in the women’s ward of Semnan prison are at risk of collapse, which considering the carelessness of the prison officials is a threat to the lives of prisoners.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, the bathrooms in women’s ward of Semnan Prison are at risk of collapse. Over the last two weeks, the prisoners have been obliged not to use the bathrooms more than 6 hours a day (three hours in the morning and three hours in the afternoon). And contrary to the hygienic principles, the prison officials have shut off the flushing systems, causing a lot of contamination in the ward.

Breathing in Confinement has been informed that the restrictions imposed by the prison officials have provoked the prisoners’ protest. In response, the officials showing the photos of the water leakage to the prisoners have told them that the building was in danger of being collapsed, and that they had no choices but to restrict the prisoners’ use of bathrooms.

Instead of transferring the prisoners to a safe place and reconstructing the bathrooms, the prison authorities have just restricted their use of the bathrooms, the act which only postpones the building demolition for a few days while the threat to the lives of the prisoners is still there.

In addition, given the non-availability of enough detergents and disinfectants, the hygienic condition of the women ward is also very poor, leading to the outbreak of skin diseases among the prisoners, while lice are also found everywhere. In this condition, restricting the use of bathrooms just exacerbates the spread the diseases.
